The costume design of Twelfth Night focuses on the opening up of the characters, shown in a progression of shape and color, moving from dark, through deep jewel tones, into a pastel palette, while the shapes open up. This change is instigated by Viola, who starts wet from a shipwreck, and then continues an association with water through colors and textures. She brings cleansing to the world. Twelfth Night is set in Illyria, which to Shakespeare’s audience would be a far off, familiar past. For this reason, our Illyria was not based in a literal time or place, drawing inspiration from a host of late Victorian sources, from fashion to impressionist art.

Research
My research for Twelfth Night included a wide variety of sources, like various art pieces from the turn of the century, to fashion spanning from about 1870-1920. All of these were then synthesized to create an aesthetic which had historical basis, but was not singularly grounded in a specific time period, instead feeling like an indeterminate "far off past"
