Orlando

Orlando was my first foray into directing. I co-directed the show with Tyler Berg and Carlee Wuchterl, and we adopted a feminist approach of having an equal voice in directing and in design. This show was life changing for me: it is a beautiful story, and was a perfect group of people to tell it. While I don't plan to pursue directing, it taught me so much about collaboration, storytelling, and theatre as a whole. We produced the show in the round, and used only black and white for the simplistic costumes and set, which transition with Orlando through time and gender. The music included anachronistic but emotional songs such as Whitney Houston's "I'm Every Woman" and Carol King's "You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman"

Process
Orlando started as a class project with theoretical design aspects, and our team was so inspired that we decided to produce it. Our original images included puzzle pieces and frameworks, which can transition through time and gender with Orlando. These came through in the final product in a simplistic framework set and costumes. In production, it was a very different process for me, with being in rehearsals, and learning what it means to collaborate as a director.
